UNIT 1: Civil Engineering
Here we go! We are now beginning our first unit with an introduction into the field of Civil Engineering, and more specifically, Bridge Building! Students will work cooperatively in teams of three or four. These "companies" will be given an allotted budget in which they can purchase land (cardboard), lumber (toothpicks), welding material (glue), and cable for suspension bridges (string). Be careful to plan and purchase your supplies appropriately or you'll be hurt by inflation!

When bridges are complete, parents will be invited to come and watch the bridge breaking ceremony where the company with the strongest bridge (measured with buckets of gravel) will be awarded medals! Bridge Breaking Ceremony date TBD.

Welcome to STEM!
Welcome to Mesa View and welcome to STEM 6th graders! This is the third year that we've implemented the 6th grade STEM cycle. It has been so successful and I am looking forward to another exciting year of designing, testing, building, and breaking!

Bring your creative minds and explore Civil Engineering through bridge building, BioMedical Science through studying the senses' relationships to the brain (and see a brain dissection!), and MagLev, our newest addition to STEM, by building and racing both wind-powered and electrically generated magnetically levitating cars! So exciting, right!?

Students, I will see you 5th or 6th period (depending on your teacher) on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
Parents, if you would like to volunteer your time, I welcome you to come on in! We encourage parent involvement!

Want to donate supplies? We can always use wood glue, toothpicks, solder, scissors, popsicle sticks, etc.
